State Reciprocity Authorization

Welcome to the Alabama reciprocity website. We appreciate your interest in providing additional educational opportunities for Alabama's citizens.

Any institution not participating in the National Council-State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) is subject and responsible for all requirements under federal state authorization guidelines and Alabama Code § 16-5-10 (14) 1975, and all applicable professional licensure/certification provided for under state law.

Educator Preparation Programs: State autorization to provide a program related to the preparation of teachers or other P-12 school/system personnel does not indicate eligibility for an Alabama professional educator or professional leadership certificate. Applicants who complete an educator preparation program at a non-Alabama institution must apply for an Alabama professional educator or professional leadership certificate through the Alabama Certificate Reciprocity Approach. Current requirements may be found at www.alsde.edu.

Nursing Programs: State approval of a program to offer Alabama licensed nurses' opportunities for advanced degrees does not indicate eligibility for approval to practice as an advanced practice nurse in Alabama. Applicants for approval in Alabama are required to meet the Alabama requirements for national certification, graduation from a specific-type program for the advanced practice approval, and completion of the appropriate application. Any program offering a pre-licensure track to Alabama students shall meet the requirements of the Alabama regulations for pre-licensure programs or the graduates may not be eligible to take the national licensure examination required by the Alabama Board of Nursing to enter the practice. www.abn.alabama.gov

SPECIAL NOTE:
Any non-Alabama institution presently authorized/licensed to operate in the state under state authorization may continue to operate within the state. Upon expiration of the license or review requirements, the institution may request renewal of authority/recognition to operate. If the institution is an approved SARA participant, the option to operate under SARA guidelines are available. In both cases, professional licensure between the institution and state are the responsibility of the institution providing services, the state's licensing authority and the student.
